EY: The number and efficiency of tax audits increased significantly last year
NAV is knocking on more and more doors: after years of stagnation, not only did the number of tax audits increase last year compared to the 2021 data, but the tax deficit revealed per audit also increased, and moreover, the efficiency of inspections is getting better among high-profile taxpayers as well – they call the tax litigation experts of EY Law drew attention to it based on the tax office’s 2022 yearbook.
The 2022 yearbook of the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has been published. In the publication, the tax office summarizes the audit focus areas and experiences of the previous year, which it also supports with statistics. Last year, the number of inspections carried out by NAV was more than 160,000, which represents a 6.2% increase compared to 2021 data, while the established net tax difference amounted to almost HUF 200 billion, which is 7.8% resulted in an increase.
Browsing the statistics further, it can be established that the number of completed investigations for taxpayers with the highest and highest tax performance has increased drastically compared to 2021: it increased by 48% last year. The tax authority concluded 864 audits in their area, in more than two-thirds of which it made findings. As a result, NAV revealed a net tax difference of HUF 19.5 billion and imposed almost the same amount of tax fines. When broken down into individual checks, this tax shortfall increased 47 times compared to 2021.
