Climate activists protest against ocean cruise tourism in an extreme way
Activists of the climate protection group Extinction Rebellion (XR) chained themselves to the world’s largest sea lock in the port of the Dutch city of IJmuiden on Sunday, protesting against environmental pollution caused by ocean cruise tourism.
The Dutch news portal NL Times reported that several tourist boats and an oil tanker were unable to pass through the area due to the live action.
The activists “Oil kills, enough of the tourist ships!” – signs were also held aloft. A local police spokesman said eight activists were escorted to the guard room and later released, with no arrests made.
The world’s largest sea lock is located in IJmuiden, which supports ship traffic coming from the North Sea to Amsterdam, which is not far away.
