An everyday foodstore from the 21st century – Video of the day
A Swedish startup called Wheelys is trying to one up Amazon in the automated checkout game, by creating a cashier-free store in Shanghai. However, after launching the first prototype in the city, the company is shifting gears to a more quirky option. Wheelys has just announced something called the Moby Mart, a cashier-free store that will drive around the streets of Shanghai, completely automated.
The idea itself is pretty innovative, as it could bring quality goods to underdeveloped urban areas that rely more on small general stores rather than large retail chains. How practical it will be is another story, seeing as Shanghai has some of the worst traffic jams in the world. It’s all well and good if your store can drive around, but people don’t want to wait hours to visit the store, or have to sidle through jam-packed cars in the street just to get some milk and eggs.
