More than 600 tons of plastic waste can be saved annually
The latest survey of the Hungarian Logistics Service Centers Association (MLSZKSZ) on the packaging habits of the logistics market shows that sustainable packaging solutions are becoming increasingly important in the domestic logistics sector. According to the association’s findings, companies are increasingly striving to reduce plastic use and to apply cost-effective, environmentally friendly packaging technologies. The market trend is also being strengthened by the tightening regulatory environment and the increasing sustainability expectations of business partners, which may further accelerate the transition in the coming years.
According to the survey of the Hungarian Logistics Service Centers Association on the packaging habits of the logistics market, more and more companies in the domestic logistics sector are taking concrete steps to reduce the use of plastic packaging. From the food industry to the beverage and pharmaceutical industries to warehousing, more than 1,200 Hungarian companies are already using modern solutions, such as EcoFoil, which reduces the amount of industrial plastic waste by more than 600 tons per year. This is not only a significant environmental result, but also represents an annual cost saving of approximately HUF 1 billion for users, which is complemented by an additional HUF 131 million reduction in EPR fees.
Packaging film use can be reduced by up to a third
The survey also records specific examples of the tangible benefits of environmentally friendly packaging solutions. For example, a domestic food company was able to halve the amount of packaging film used per pallet in the spring of 2024: instead of 250 grams, only 125 grams were needed on average. The result: 4.5 tons less plastic waste per year and a packaging cost saving of approximately HUF 900,000 – all without compromising transport safety.
A similar trend is shown by the experience of a dairy company, where the efficiency of manual packaging has more than tripled. Previously, a 2-kilogram roll of foil was enough to wrap an average of 7 pallets, but with the new technology, they were able to safely wrap 23 pallets from the same amount. Thanks to this, the company needed 100 rolls of foil instead of the previous 300 per month, which meant an annual material cost saving of more than 1.5 million forints.
“Sustainable packaging in logistics is not only an environmental requirement, but also a competitiveness factor. New technologies, such as environmentally friendly stretch foil, are good examples of how plastic use can be reduced without compromising transport safety.”
– emphasized Ajtony Bíró Koppány, Secretary General of the MLSZKSZ.
