Middle-aged Hungarians travel an average of 17,000 kilometers per year
While middle-aged Hungarian drivers have been driving the same average of 16-18 thousand kilometers for years, their fuel expenses have increased due to the increase in the cost of refueling, according to the K&H Sure Future survey. The average monthly fuel expense has risen to a record level of 30 thousand forints, but this has also brought a favorable result: the proportion of those who do not drive alone has increased from 37 to 54 percent.
Fuel prices have once again come into focus, as the average price at Hungarian gas stations has gradually increased since the beginning of January. This imposes additional expenses on motorists, as has happened in previous years. According to the K&H Sure Future survey conducted in the last quarter of last year, 30-59 year-olds with their own car in their household drive an average of 17 thousand kilometers per year, which is not a significant change compared to previous years. At the same time, monthly expenses have increased due to changes in fuel prices.
How much do they leave at the gas stations?
According to the latest results of the research, the average fuel cost amounted to 30 thousand forints per month in 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 2 thousand forints compared to the estimate given a year earlier. This is also the highest value in the history of the survey, which began in the mid-2010s. In the long term, a clear upward trend is visible in fuel costs: in 2017, an average of 20 thousand forints was spent per month, which increased to 21-22 thousand forints in the following years. A larger change occurred in the 2021 measurement: in the previous year, the cost had already jumped to 25 thousand forints per month, then increased by another 3 thousand forints by 2022, until finally the value peaked at 30 thousand forints by 2024. People living in smaller settlements use their cars more, which is also reflected in the costs: while Budapest residents spend an average of 23,000 forints per month on fuel, middle-aged drivers living in villages do the same for 33,000 forints.
People who own their own cars can be divided into three larger groups based on their average monthly fuel expenditure: a third spend under 20,000 forints, nearly a quarter spend between 20 and 30,000 forints, while 35 percent spend over 30,000 forints. Nearly a tenth of them could not comment on the amount of their expenditure.
