Every year 8 billion HUF us stolen from our bank cards because of our convenience
Our convenience is our undoing: we want to quickly pounce on a good offer on the Internet and we don’t care about security – thanks to this, the rate of bank card fraud and the amount that customers lose due to abuse are rising again. According to Péter Gergely, the financial expert of BiztosDöntés.hu, we can make our online purchases safe with a few steps.
In recent months, Hungary has fallen from a former top student to the middle ground in terms of damage suffered by bank card fraud. While, according to statistics, in previous years our country was regularly on the podium in terms of the security of bank card payments – thanks to, for example, the SMS control introduced in our country for the first time in the world -, the situation has worsened in recent months.
According to the data of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, the number of bank card abuses committed during the past year exceeded 182 thousand, and bank card fraudsters obtained more than HUF 8 billion during the frauds. According to Péter Gergely, the financial expert of BiztosDöntés.hu, the number of successful abuses increased by a fifth in a single year, but what is even more worrying is that the damage value essentially doubled. Although the amount of damage per misuse still dwarfs the HUF 1.5 million per misuse in the case of wire transfer damages, according to the expert, it is a warning that in the second half of last year, in the case of a successful bank card fraud, fraudsters already shortened the amount by more than fifty thousand forints customers. In 2021, this value was only HUF 20,000.
