Eurostat: the number of guest nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the EU continued to increase
The estimated number of nights spent in tourist accommodation in the EU reached 2.99 billion in 2024, up 53.4 million, or 2 percent, from the previous year, the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, said on Friday.
The increase in guest nights was mainly due to an increase in the number of nights spent by foreign travellers (+58.7 million), while the number of nights spent by domestic visitors in their own country showed a modest decrease (-5.3 million) last year.
In 2024, the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation in the EU was balanced between foreign (48 percent) and domestic (52 percent) guests.
In terms of guest nights, hotels and similar accommodation were the most popular (1.9 billion), accounting for 63 percent of all guest nights. This was followed by holiday homes and other short-term accommodation services (711 million, 24 percent), then campsites (396 million, 13 percent).
Looking at the data for individual EU countries, the report shows that the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation increased almost everywhere last year compared to 2023. The largest increases were recorded in Luxembourg (+22 percent), Malta (+13 percent) and Latvia (+7 percent). In contrast, a slight decrease was recorded in France and Belgium (-1 percent in both countries), while in Sweden, Finland and Italy the relevant figures were broadly in line with the previous year’s figures.
According to the EU statistical office, the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation in Hungary in 2023 was 30,488,308, and – based on currently available data – in the first 11 months of 2024 this number was 27,451,045.
