Eurostat: the number of short-term guest nights booked on online platforms in the EU continued to increase
The number of short-term overnight stays booked on online platforms in the European Union member states continued to rise: in the third quarter of 2024, 366.2 million short-term overnight stays were recorded, 18 percent more than in the same period of the previous year, the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, announced.
According to the EU statistical office, the number of nights spent in accommodation booked via online platforms – Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or Tripadvisor – increased in all three months of the third quarter of 2024.
Guests registered 135 million nights on the listed sites in July, which is a 16.4 percent increase compared to July 2023. In August, 152.2 million nights were booked via the platforms (+21.6 percent compared to August 2023), followed by 79 million in September (+14 percent compared to September 2023).
In August 2024, which is typically the busiest month for tourism, the number of short-term guest nights booked via online platforms increased in all EU countries. The largest increases compared to the same month of the previous year were recorded in Malta (+41.4 percent), Germany (+32.7 percent) and France (+29.9 percent). In contrast, the smallest increases were observed in Croatia (+9.7 percent), Bulgaria (+12.2 percent) and Slovenia (+13.6 percent).
According to the report, in Hungary, 1,588,597 guests booked accommodation on online platforms in July (1,497,350 in July 2023), 1,732,166 in August (1,524,656 in August 2023) and 928,882 in September (794,165 in September 2023).
