Eurostat: the number of guest nights spent in EU tourist accommodation establishments exceeded three billion in 2024
The number of nights spent in tourist accommodation in the EU exceeded three billion in 2024, 2.7 percent more than the previous year, the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, announced on Friday.
According to the EU’s statistical office, the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation in the EU was 3.02 billion in 2024.
62.8 percent of all nights were spent in hotels, 23.7 percent in short-term in accommodation intended for stay, such as rented apartments, and 13.5 percent in campsites and holiday complexes.
Among the EU countries, the largest annual increase in the number of guest nights was recorded in Cyprus (+14.5 percent) and Malta (+14.4 percent), followed by Latvia (+7.4 percent) compared to 2023. In contrast, only two countries recorded a slight decrease in the number of guest nights: Finland (-0.7%) and France (-0.6%).
Of the guest nights spent in the EU, 51.9% (1.57 billion) were spent by domestic guests in their own country, while the remaining 48.1% (1.45 billion) were spent by foreign guests.
The majority of guest nights spent by foreign guests (61.6%) were spent by tourists from other EU countries or other European countries (21.3%).
In EU accommodation 16.5 percent of the total guest nights spent were enjoyed by visitors from other regions of the world. Most of them came from North America. The share of guest nights spent by them was 7.5 percent, ahead of Asia (4.9 percent), Central and South America (2.3 percent), the Pacific Ocean countries (1 percent), and Africa (0.8 percent).
According to the report of the EU statistical office, the number of guest nights spent in tourist accommodation in Hungary increased by 4.3 percent, from 30.488 million in 2023 to 31.802 million in 2024.
