Eurostat: the number of guest nights booked on online platforms continued to increase

The number of nights spent in short-term accommodation in EU member states continued to increase in the second quarter of the year compared to the same period of the previous year, the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, announced on Wednesday.

According to the EU’s statistical office, guests spent 245.9 million nights in short-term accommodation in the European Union in the second quarter of 2025, booked through Airbnb, Booking or Expedia.

According to the EU’s statistical office, guests spent 245.9 million nights in short-term accommodation in the European Union in the second quarter of 2025.

The number of nights spent in short-term accommodation in the European Union continued to increase in the second quarter of 2025, compared to the same period of the previous year, the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, reported. In the second quarter of 2025, it increased by 17.8 percent compared to the same quarter of 2024, and by 36.8 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023.

The number of nights spent in short-term accommodation in April was 34.3 percent higher than in April 2024, primarily due to the Easter holidays falling in April this year. This increase was followed by a more modest 5.3 percent increase in May and a larger 18.1 percent increase in June compared to the same months in 2024.

Describing the most popular regions for accommodation booked through online platforms, the report reported records for the first quarter of 2025, according to which the most such accommodation was booked in the Canary Islands in Spain (8.8 million nights), followed by the Rhine-Alpes region in France (8.1 million) and Andalusia in Spain (7.7 million). In the same quarter, five of the top twenty regions were in Spain, five in France, three in Italy, two each in Austria and Portugal, and one each in Hungary, Poland and Greece.

According to the report, between January 1 and the end of March 2025, the most short-term accommodation bookings on online platforms in Hungary were in Budapest, with 1,684,172. In the Western Transdanubia region, 64,414 guests booked short-term accommodation via online platforms, in the Southern Great Plain region 55,249, in the Northern Great Plain region 50,187, in the Southern Transdanubia region 43,399, in the Northern Hungary region 36,198, in the Central Transdanubia region 27,897, and finally in the region belonging to Pest County 20,521 guests booked short-term accommodation via online platforms.
