Eurostat: 132 kilograms of food was wasted per inhabitant in the EU in 2022
On average, around 132 kilograms of food waste was generated per inhabitant in the European Union in 2022, five kilograms more than what was recorded in the first report on this topic published in 2020, the statistical office of the European Union, Eurostat, announced on Friday.
According to the report of the EU office, a total of 59.2 million tons of food waste was generated in the EU in 2022, and households produced 54 percent of this, which amounted to 72 kilograms per inhabitant.
The remaining 46 percent was generated in the food supply chain. Per capita, around 10 kilograms of food waste was generated in production (14 kilograms in 2020), 25 kilograms in manufacturing (23 kilograms in 2020), 15 kilograms in catering (12 kilograms in 2020) and 11 kilograms in food distribution. , while this figure was 9 kilograms in 2020
