The European Union (EU) population is steadily aging. While in 2014, 18.5 percent of the total population was over 65, by 2080 this proportion is expected to reach 30 percent – according to the survey of Eurostat, which was issued on the ocassion of the World Day of the Elderly.
The study found that the proportion of people over 80 has more than doubled in almost all Member States, so within 65 years 12 percent of the union's population, one in eight EU resident will be over 80 years. This demographic trend poses a challenge for the European Union in terms of the economy as well as the social integration of older people. (MTI)
