Europol: 16.6 million packages of counterfeit or harmful toys removed from EU markets

In the past two years, 16.6 million packages of counterfeit or harmful toys worth 36.8 million euros have been withdrawn from European Union markets, the European Union’s police cooperation organization based in The Hague, Europol, announced on Thursday.

According to the Hague statement, the operation was carried out in cooperation with law enforcement agencies from 26 countries, including Hungary, An operation to crack down on manufacturers and importers of counterfeit toys has seized 8.2 million packages of toys this year, with an estimated value of around €8.7 million.

The competent authorities identified 280 people involved in the production or illegal trade of counterfeit toys during the year.

Last year’s operation saw the seizure of 8.4 million packages of toys across the EU, with an estimated value of €28.1 million. Authorities have arrested 275 people for counterfeiting or illegal trade in 2024.

The seized counterfeit toys were mainly imported into Europe on commercial ships. In most cases, investigators found intellectual property infringements and a lack of certification of compliance with the relevant European Union legal standards. In addition, in several cases, the presence of hazardous substances was discovered in the toys, they informed.
