Marketplaces generate 69% of European cross-border sales
In the financial year 2023/2024, the whole European online cross-border market achieved sales of 326 billion euros. A large majority, 69 percent, or 225 billion euros came from online marketplaces.
These data come from the fifth edition of the “Top 100 Cross-Border Marketplaces Europe” report from Cross-Border Commerce Europe. The report includes a list of the biggest online marketplaces in Europe. The top 10 marketplaces even generated more than half of the marketplace-driven turnover.
Additionally, the complete top 100 generated a turnover of 197.01 billion euros. This reflects an increase of 39.29 percent. However, the researchers expect that the share of marketplaces in total ecommerce GMV will decline, from 69 percent to 67.9 percent by 2025. This could signal market maturation.
At the same time, cross-border GMV in Europe is expected to increase. By 2025, it is expected that 97.3 percent of visitors will be cross-border. “The findings from our latest report underscore the dynamic evolution of cross-border e-commerce in Europe’, said Carine Moitier, founder of Cross-Border Commerce Europe.
“The substantial growth rates among the top 100 marketplaces indicate not only the sector’s resilience but also the expanding consumer preference for cross-border shopping. These trends suggest a promising future for both established players and new entrants who are poised to capitalize on the opportunities within this rapidly evolving market.”
Earlier this year, Cross-Border Commerce Europe also published a report on the cross-border ecommerce market in 2023. The market increased 32 percent compared to a year earlier. Together, European online stores generated 107 billion euros in cross-border turnover.
