A significant majority of the Hungarian population finds assistance insurance attractive and useful, according to Europ Assistance’s recent Assistance Insurance Index research. According to the representative survey, nearly three-quarters of Hungarians believe that assistance insurance can provide them with real, reliable help in the event of a car or home emergency. The research also shows that around four-fifths of the population consider it important to have insurance.

Europ Assistance conducted a comprehensive, representative survey to examine the awareness and perception of assistance insurance, as well as the attitudes of the Hungarian population towards insurance.

The company has been providing an independent AutoSOS service since 2011; before that, customers could typically use car assistance when purchasing a new vehicle or as part of CASCO insurance. Home assistance could be requested as part of home insurance.

The Assistance Insurance Index, published by the company for the first time in Hungary, achieved 36 points out of a maximum of 100 points in 2026, which indicates that assistance insurance is even less well known. Less than half of Hungarians (43%) have heard of assistance insurance.

The majority find assistance insurance reliable and useful

At least seven to eight out of ten respondents find assistance services useful and attractive, and about three-quarters of Hungarians believe that they provide truly reliable, effective help. While the majority of those surveyed have a positive attitude towards assistance, their actual use is still relatively low: 10 percent of the population currently uses vehicle assistance, while 12 percent uses home assistance. In contrast, the potential demand is much higher: if there was a suitable offer, a third (32%) of Hungarians would be open to taking out car assistance and nearly half (49%) would be open to taking out home assistance.

The Assistance Insurance Index is higher among men (39 points), the 30–59 age group (37 points), those with higher education (42 points) and those living in large cities (39 points). In addition, above-average values characterize those raising small children (40 points), those owning a car (39 points), and those already using assistance services (59 points).

Among the segments examined, car assistance achieved a main index of 33 points, which is the aggregate result of the sub-indicators of perception (64 points), awareness (24 points), and expected use (19 points). Home assistance has a 39-point main index, which consists of the sub-indices of perception (67 points), expected use (27 points) and awareness (23 points).

The research also revealed that unexpected events are common in everyday life when assistance would be of real help: 44% of the population has experienced a home emergency in the past year, while two-fifths of motorists have also faced an unforeseen problem while traveling.

Hungarians consider insurance important

The vast majority of the population considers the role of insurance important: 79 percent of those surveyed believe that having some kind of insurance is necessary. However, insurance awareness shows a mixed picture: while seven out of ten Hungarians trust online insurance price comparison sites, only 63 percent of the population trusts insurance companies themselves. Only 54 percent of respondents consider their own information to be adequate.
