Amazon and TikTok recently signed an agreement that will allow users to buy Amazon products directly within the app. The collaboration is expected to boost the “social shopping” market and social selling will not only be another sales channel, but also a strategic tool, where creative, interactive content will play a key role in attracting customers and increasing sales. Social selling and remotely monitored, fully self-service stores, or even artificial intelligence; the EuroCIS 2025 exhibition in Düsseldorf is once again setting the path for the future of retail.

In the European Union, after two consecutive years of decline, personal consumption spent on retail slowly returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2024. However, the retail share of household consumption varies greatly from country to country. In several Eastern European countries, especially Hungary (50 percent), almost every second euro is spent on retail. By comparison, in Germany, only 27 percent of consumer spending goes to the retail sector. In the first nine months of 2024, retail sales grew by 2.7 percent, and next year, forced wage outflows will boost consumption sharply. At the same time, businesses are likely to experience major changes in consumer behavior and retailers will be under increasing pressure to optimize their operations.
