Eurobarometer: majority of Europeans would strengthen defence and security
66 percent of all Europeans surveyed, and 63 percent of Hungarian respondents, believe that the European Union should play a more important role in protecting against global crises and security risks, according to a comprehensive public opinion poll conducted by the European Parliament and published on Tuesday.
According to the Winter Eurobarometer survey, EU citizens agree that EU member states should act more unitedly in the face of current global challenges (89 percent) and that the European Union needs more tools to face current global challenges (76 percent).
In Hungary, 89 percent of those surveyed also agree that more united action is necessary, and 10 percent more respondents than the EU average (86 percent) believe that the EU needs more tools to do so.
According to respondents, the EU should focus most on defence and security (36 percent), and competitiveness, strengthening the economy and boosting industry (32 percent) to strengthen its place in the world. Respondents then stressed the elimination of energy independence (25 percent), ensuring food security and supporting agriculture (both 27 percent), and the importance of the role of education and research (23 percent).
