BKK bids farewell to the second generation of Bubi with an event
The Budapest Transport Center will bid farewell to the second generation of the MOL Bubi public bike system on March 5th with a special event that also involves users. The company is preparing to introduce the new, expanded service in the coming period. The new bikes and the system, which will cover a much larger area and provide at least 5,000 bikes over time, will arrive by mid-June at the latest.
The company will bid farewell to the second generation of MOL Bubi on March 5th at 4 p.m. in the City Hall Park, involving users. BKK welcomes all those who regularly or occasionally use the public bike system to the event, and asks participants to arrive with Bubi if possible – so that they can collect the bikes together on the last day.
The second generation of MOL Bubi is one of BKK’s biggest success stories, and the numbers speak for themselves: after the radical renewal of the initial system, the number of trips increased 5-8 times, over the past 4.5 years, it has been rented out more than 14 million times, and BKK customers have cycled more than 28 million kilometers with the bikes.
Pilot period closed
BKK launched the pilot period following the end of the second generation of Bubi in December 2025 with the aim of examining the usage habits of Bubi users in the 6th district by involving Mobi points. According to the plans, these uniform urban micromobility points will allow bicycles to be picked up and dropped off in as many places as possible in the new generation of Bubi, and will also allow scooters and other micromobility devices to be dropped off at these stations in addition to bicycles. BKK is analyzing Mobi point usage data anonymously to better understand user needs, optimize the network, and prepare for the introduction of the new Bubi generation as efficiently as possible. The pilot period ends on March 5, the validity of pilot passes will end at midnight on that day, and the bikes will disappear from the streets for a short time. The company will inform users of further information by email and on the company’s website.
The new Bubi is coming soon
The company is working hard on the introduction of the next generation of Bubi, for which it signed a contract with the new service partner last year. The new system represents progress in every respect: a much larger, flexibly expandable fleet of new bicycles will be available to users.
The number of bicycles in the new Bubi generation will increase significantly: in the initial period, the new system will provide a total of 3,300 bicycles (2,500 of which are mechanical and 800 electrically assisted). Over time, at least 5,000 completely new bicycles will be available, and then it will be possible to cover all important transport hubs with a minimum of 30,000 trips, i.e. all metro stations, beyond the borders of the current service area. The aim of the electrically assisted bicycles is to serve a wider range of users. Reaching customers for whom the Bubi service has not been a realistic alternative for some reason, but who can now choose it with confidence.
BKK will continue to recommend the use of public transport and other sustainable and shared forms of transport in the spring months – until the arrival of the new Bubi – and will support private service providers operating in Budapest and offering alternative solutions.
The new generation of Bubi will be launched no later than June 22, 2026, but BKK and its service provider are investigating the possibility of allowing users to use the even better, more easily accessible public bike service as soon as possible.
