Retail food sales increased in value, but decreased by volume
According to Nielsen market research company, retail food sales increased by 5 percent betwen June 2008 and May 2009 compared to the same period of the previous year, while volume decreased by 2 percent.
The retail sales of 90 food categories measured by Nielsen, the total turnover exceeded 1,300 billion HUF between June 2008 and May 2009. The retail sale value of the meat products with the largest traffic increased by 6 percent, and in exceeded 205 billion HUF compared to previous year. Beer sales were stagnating, cheeses increased by 3 percent, while carbonated soft drinks have not changed. Retail sales of rice, energy drinks, peppers, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and butter increased between 15 and 37 percent. Because of the restructuring of the shopping habits, the market share of supermarkets increased by 15 percent while the market share of discounts increased by 5 percent from one year to another. However, the market share of the traditional, less than 200 square meters shops and markets, decreased by 8 percent.
