Organic farming can be strengthened in Hungary
Climate change, the harmful effects of industrial agriculture and the increase in health risks are increasingly emphasizing the importance of sustainability and environmental awareness in agriculture. Worldwide, increasing attention is being paid to organic farming, which tries to ensure sustainable food production with methods close to nature.
Organic farming is gaining ground in Hungary as well: in the last 18 years, the size of this type of agricultural land has increased two and a half times. Organic farming, which works by limiting the use of chemical pesticides, fertilizers and yield enhancers, applies high animal welfare standards and helps protect the environment.
However, the transition to organic farming is not an easy process. During the transition period – which can take up to three years depending on the culture – farmers are already faced with additional costs due to eco-technologies, but the products produced in this way cannot yet be sold as organic products.
A significant part of the world’s organic agricultural areas is located in Australia and Oceania, while Europe also has a significant share. More and more Hungarian producers are seeing the potential of organic farming, and the global demand for organic production is constantly growing, in 2022 the organic food and beverage market will reach 135 billion euros.
