Rural accommodations closed a stronger half year than last year
The momentum of tourism in 2023 will continue to make its impact felt. According to the data of the National Tourist Information Center (NTAK), between January and June, 7.5 million guests spent 17.8 million guest nights in domestic accommodations, which exceeded the value of the first half of last year’s record year by 7.6%. The increase in traffic in rural destinations, where almost two-thirds of the guest nights were generated, also contributed greatly to the results. In the first half of the year, the 10.7 million accommodation turnover of the accommodation facilities outside the capital exceeded that of 2023 by almost 4%, and that of Balaton even exceeded this, increasing by 6.3%. The 7.2% increase in foreign guest nights also contributed to the increase in rural guest traffic.
In the first semester, 60% of all guest nights were spent in accommodations outside Budapest. While 87% of domestic guest nights and 35% of foreign accommodation traffic were linked to accommodation outside the capital. The region’s main foreign sending markets were Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, and Poland. The number of guest nights increased markedly from all of them, for example from Poland by 42%. The majority of those coming from beyond the country’s border visited the Hungarian sea. Accommodations at Lake Balaton were able to enjoy 10.7% more foreign guest nights this semester. The second and third most frequent choices of international guests were Debrecen and its region, as well as Bükk-Sárvár, where 34.7% and 13.8% more foreign guest nights were registered in the first six months of this year.
The region’s domestic traffic is also dominated by Lake Balaton, which accounted for more than a quarter of domestic guest nights. The interest in the region is also clearly shown by the fact that the number of tourists arriving here in the first six months of the year increased by more than a tenth compared to last year. After our number one rural area, most rural domestic guests spent their nights in Mátra-Bükk and in the area around Budapest.
