The domestic goose sector has gained strength, but goose meat is still expensive
After the bird flu epidemic, the domestic goose sector is on the rise again, and in the second half of the year, the purchase and slaughter of fattened geese picked up significantly, but at the same time, St. Martin’s Day is again expensive for consumers because of the goose meat.
According to the overview of the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy (NAK), high-quality Hungarian goose meat and liver will be available to domestic consumers on St. Martin’s Day. Despite the fact that the year did not start in a favorable situation for domestic goose farmers – due to two successive waves of the bird flu epidemic, the fewest geese were produced in the first half of the year in recent years -, according to the NAK announcement, production will increase again in the second half of the year (although bird flu can break this process at any time), which hopefully will not lead to a shortage of domestic goose meat on the upcoming St. Martin’s Day either.
Following the lifting of epidemic prevention restrictions, the purchase of fattened geese gained momentum, significantly exceeding the figures of previous years week by week. According to the statistics of the Goose Association, a total of 15,000 tons of live geese were slaughtered in domestic slaughterhouses in the first nine months of the year, which is 17 percent higher than the previous year.
