Strawberry season 2025: the popular fruit still hasn’t gotten cheaper
The strawberry season traditionally starts in spring in our country, but due to the continuous price increase in recent years, fewer and fewer people can afford to regularly buy this early-ripening fruit. There was no significant price decrease in 2025 either: although the ominously predicted price of 5,000 forints per kilo in March did not come true, the actual prices are still in the higher range.
A strawberry gardener from the Szeged area told Délmagyar at the end of March that at the beginning of the season the price of strawberries typically starts around 5,000 forints, and then as the market expands, prices are expected to decrease. At the same time, he warned: the attractive prices of 1,500 forints posted by sellers usually do not cover the prices per kilo, but smaller packages, and moreover, these are mostly strawberries from Greece and Spain, not from domestic production. The price of real Hungarian strawberries per kilo ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 forints.
According to a survey conducted by Kemma.hu in Tatabánya, a similar situation can be observed at the end of April: the price of strawberries fluctuates between 1,500 and 4,000 forints. The cheaper prices mostly apply to imported, half-kilo packaged fruits, while the price of Hungarian strawberries grown in foil tents remains higher. Strawberry farm owner Kata Tóth told the county newspaper that, in addition to the place of origin, the price difference can also be influenced by whether an invoice is issued for the purchase.
The expert added that the taste of Hungarian strawberries is generally more intense and sweeter, while imported fruit has a waterier consistency and is less aromatic. The good news is that although the frosts in March endangered the harvest, farmers successfully protected the plantations, so there will definitely be domestic strawberries on offer this season.
However, the question remains how much buyers can get it for: after last year’s prices of between 1,500 and 3,200 forints per kilo, we cannot expect significantly lower prices on the domestic market this year either.
