According to a recent report by the Hungarian Logistics, Purchasing and Inventory Management Association (MLBKT), the seasonally adjusted Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) fell to 48.9 points in August, indicating a decline in manufacturing activity. The figure is lower than the long-term August average (52.5), but higher than the same month average of the past three years (48.8).
Most of the sub-indices weakened:
- new orders fell by 4.3 percentage points, showing the second lowest August value since 1995,
- the employment index fell below 50 points again (48.0), a decrease of 2.1 percentage points,
- both the delivery lead time and the export index remained below 50,
- the purchased inventory index decreased, but remained above 50, indicating expansion.
On the positive side, production volumes increased slightly and purchases also increased, while purchase prices increased only moderately. The finished goods inventory index decreased by 2.4 percentage points, indicating a decrease in inventory levels.
According to the MLBKT summary, August was a below-average month: the long-term average since 1995 is 52.6 points, so the current 48.9 points is the fourth lowest August value. The report highlighted that this is the second time in the summer months that a slowdown has been observed in the manufacturing industry.
In the raw material market, respondents reported a significant price increase, for example, in the case of steel, lumber and precision steel pipes, while the prices of cardboard, paper goods and non-ferrous metals decreased. They also experienced a shortage of precision steel pipes in the market.
