UN: worldwide food insecurity continued to increase last year
The insecurity of the food supply has increased further in 2023, according to the UN report published on Wednesday, according to which 282 million people are in urgent need of food aid. The world organization explained the increase with armed conflicts, economic crises and extreme weather phenomena.
Last year was the fifth year in a row when the number of people in need of food aid increased, which by the way was 24 million in 2022.
Fleur Wouterse, a senior staff member of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), named Sudan and the Gaza Strip as places where intervention is particularly needed. He added: in 2023, about 700,000 people were on the brink of starvation, of which 600,000 were from the Palestinian-inhabited Gaza Strip.
