UN: International tourist arrivals up 4% last year
The number of international tourists increased by 4 percent in 2025. Some 1.52 billion people traveled worldwide last year, nearly 60 million more than in 2024, according to a report released Tuesday by the Madrid-based United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Europe, the world’s largest tourist destination, welcomed 793 million foreign tourists last year, a 4 percent increase compared to 2024.
The number of inbound tourists increased by 5 percent in Western Europe, 3 percent in Southern Mediterranean Europe, and 6 percent in Central and Eastern Europe.
The number of tourists visiting the Americas for tourism purposes increased by 1 percent to 218 million, but there was a large difference between regions.
The number of visitors to Africa increased by 8 percent to 81 million, with the number of travelers to North Africa in particular increasing.
The number of visitors to the Middle East increased by 3 percent to almost 100 million, and the number of travelers to the Asia-Pacific region increased by 6 percent to 331 million.
According to the organization’s calculations, international tourism receipts also increased last year: by 5 percent to 1.9 trillion dollars.
