This is how much Hungarians spend on graduation
Graduation is one of the most important milestones in a young person’s life, and the range of gifts is accordingly wide: everything from simple attentions to luxury items can be found. Families preparing for high school graduations are choosing surprises according to their budget this year, but the value of gifts is also increasing due to the influence of social media. Vg.hu covered the topic.
Flowers and small gifts
An indispensable part of graduation is the bouquet of flowers, which costs an average of 5–25 thousand forints, but some special arrangements can be even more expensive. Plush figures and smaller gifts are available for 2–6 thousand forints.
Jewelry, watches, cash
Jewelry remains popular: a simpler silver necklace costs 10–40 thousand forints, while gold jewelry costs 50–200 thousand forints. Fashion and smart watches are available for 20–80 thousand forints, and are especially popular among boys. It is also customary to give money as a gift: the average amount is 20–30 thousand forints, but gifts of over 100 thousand forints are not uncommon, often in creative forms, such as money trees or balloons.
Surprises of greater value
Some families surprise graduates with a used car (1–3 million forints), an iPhone, a MacBook or a luxury brand bag (300 thousand–1.2 million forints). In the case of a trip abroad, the costs can range from 300 thousand to even 1 million forints.
Gifts for teachers
A student contribution of 2–5 thousand forints often results in gifts worth 20–60 thousand forints for class teachers and teachers, for example in the form of a wellness voucher, a wine package or a handmade commemorative plaque.
Graduation Costs in Summary
According to the Central Statistical Office, an average graduation – including gifts, lunch, and photos – costs between 30,000 and 80,000 forints, but a middle-class family can spend up to 150,000 and 250,000 forints. For the wealthier, this amount can be several times that.
Although trends point towards increasingly expensive gifts, many families prefer to focus on emotional value, making the big day memorable with creative and personal surprises.
