Ministry of Energy: Domestic green energy capacity exceeds 9 gigawatts
According to MAVIR energy management data, the total installed capacity of renewable electricity generators in Hungary increased to over 9,000 megawatts by the beginning of September – the Ministry of Energy (EM) announced on its official Facebook page on Monday.
Solar systems take the lead with 8,116.5 megawatts, followed by biomass-biogas (444.5), wind (325.1), water (62.49), waste (49.4) and geothermal energy (2.7).
The capacity of domestic solar power plants reached 8 gigawatts in the summer. The number of household solar panels exceeded 300 thousand in the spring. Including industrial facilities, more than 316 thousand systems were generating clean electricity by the beginning of autumn.
According to statistics from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), between 2015 and 2024, Hungary’s renewable installed capacity expanded at the highest rate in Europe, more than eightfold.
The ministry highlighted that Hungary aims to play a leading role in the production and storage of green energy. Our country is considered a world leader in that a quarter of the electricity produced came from solar power plants last year. The government also supports the increased utilization of biogas and geothermal energy or renewable-based district heating production with the Jedlik Ányos Energy Program applications in order to make further progress, the EM entry added.
