EM: domestic solar capacity exceeded 8 gigawatts in June
The total installed capacity of Hungarian solar power plants exceeded 8,000 megawatts last month; the rise of green energy also helped to keep the import share of electricity consumption below 20 percent in the first half of this year, the Ministry of Energy (ME) announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
The ministry emphasized that Hungary is striving to play a leading role in the production and storage of green energy. Last year, solar energy represented the largest share of electricity production in Hungary in the world – with 25 percent. According to the annual statistics published recently by the International Renewable Energy Agency, between 2015 and 2024, the Hungarian renewable installed capacity expanded at the highest rate in Europe, more than eightfold.
The huge green energy capacity is also due to the fact that the import balance in the first half of 2025 amounted to less than 20 percent of gross electricity turnover, compared to nearly 25 percent in the same period last year, the Ministry of Economy announced.
They added that the data for the second quarter of this year were particularly favorable, with the import ratio being only ten percent in April, 13.5 percent in May, and 13.7 percent in June. Mavir therefore showed a better ratio in three months than last year’s best value, 15.4 percent in April.
