The tobacco harvest has begun
Looking at the average of the past years, almost 700 producers produce 5,000-6,000 tons of tobacco annually on about 2,800 hectares. The sector, together with those working in processing, provides a living for around 10,000-12,000 people, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy announced on his social media page.
The minister drew attention to the fact that domestic tobacco production is concentrated in the county of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. In the spring of this year, the Ministry of Agriculture contributed HUF 2.7 billion in targeted support to the efficiency of farms operating in the sector. In addition, of course, those concerned also have access to other agricultural support schemes from domestic and EU sources. Thus, they may also be entitled to various direct subsidies or even to rural development resources. In recent years, the ministry has endeavored to provide predictable assistance to tobacco producers, thus helping to preserve production and the related employment capacity of the sector, added István Nagy. The minister also touched on the fact that the so-called base update made possible by EU rules took place in the spring. Historical base entitlements based on the year 2018 were allocated. This creates an opportunity for the farmers engaged in real tobacco production to receive adequate funds from the domestic budget, with the help of the so-called temporary national subsidies, compared to before, emphasized the head of the agricultural ministry.
