The amount of food waste in Hungary is amazing
The majority of Hungarians claim to be environmentally conscious, and we throw approximately 300,000 tons of salvageable food into the trash every year.
80 percent of the Hungarian population considers itself climate-conscious, and 71 percent also feel that it has a positive impact on the environment, according to national representative research by the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih), the Magyar Élelmiszerbank Egyesület and Electrolux Hungary. The picture is shaded by the fact that in an average domestic household, 65 kilograms of food waste is produced per person per year. This is approximately a loss of HUF 45,000 per person per year. The main causes of waste include lack of awareness, buying and preparing too much food, and poor refrigeration habits.
The national research, which was conducted at the end of 2021 and at the beginning of 2022 and is representative of the Hungarian population, focused on mapping attitudes and reasons related to food waste. The most significant result of the survey is the discovery of the contradictory attitude of Hungarians regarding food waste. Although the majority of the population considers themselves to be climate conscious, they still significantly underestimate the amount and value of food waste generated in their households and its impact on the environment.
