The interior renovation of the Hunyadi Square Market Hall begins
The interior renovation of the Hunyadi Square Market Hall will begin on February 17, which will be realized after decades of waiting. As a first step, a temporary market will be established in the area around the hall so that the original producers’ vendors and the flea markets can operate uninterruptedly during the works. The complete reconstruction will take place between 2025 and 2027.
Temporary market to serve customers
In the first phase, a temporary market will be established next to the original producers’ market of the hall and on the Szófia street side. The contractor will begin the construction of the utilities necessary for the temporary sales areas, and it is expected that the current vendors of the hall will be operating here from July – announced Tamás Soproni, Mayor of Terézváros. During the renovation, the uninterrupted operation of the market will be ensured, so that the original producers and the flea market can also continue their activities.
Historical background and preparations
The Hunyadi Square Market Hall was built by the capital nearly 130 years ago, but the building’s condition has deteriorated significantly over the decades. After World War II, there were leaks, and in the late 1980s, the structure was insulated from below. During the renovation at that time, its current form was developed, including the central pavilions.
A design competition was announced for the complete reconstruction of the market hall in 1989, but the implementation has been delayed for decades. Although the facade was renovated in 2019, the interior has not been transformed yet. Now, however, based on new plans prepared by the Terézváros Municipality, the complete internal reconstruction can finally take place with a net budget of 2.92 billion forints. The project is coordinated by the Terézváros Property Management Company.
