Asahi Unveils Japan’s First Yeast-Derived Milk Alternative
Asahi Group Japan has introduced a new product, LIKE MILK, which is marketed as Japan’s first yeast-derived non-animal milk.
The product, which uses the company’s proprietary yeast technology, is designed to cater to those seeking alternatives to traditional animal-based milk, particularly in response to food allergies and other dietary preferences. LIKE MILK will be available for purchase via the “Makuake” support purchase platform from April 16 to June 15, 2025, with a nationwide release slated for 2026.
Responding to needs of allergy sufferers
The product is described as free from the 28 major allergens typically found in foods, and is also said to have a mild, naturally sweet taste with no strong aftertaste. It offers a nutritional profile comparable to cow’s milk, containing similar amounts of protein and calcium but with 38% less fat.
The development of LIKE MILK is part of Asahi’s initiative to address food diversity, with a specific focus on people with food allergies. Asahi’s research began with interviews with families affected by food allergies, uncovering the challenges of living with dietary restrictions.
Asahi’s yeast-based technology, which has been a subject of ongoing research at the company, was instrumental in creating a product with an appealing taste profile while avoiding common allergens.
Expanding yeast research for future growth
In 2023, Asahi created the Future Creation Headquarters to promote the development of new business sectors, such as AI and space technology. Through the introduction of LIKE MILK, the company seeks to contribute to a “food diversity” society, where individuals can enjoy food without restrictions.
In addition to its yeast research, Asahi has been exploring other uses of yeast to address health issues and contribute to the company’s future growth. The Asahi Yeast Science Project is poised to accelerate, with the potential for yeast to become a cornerstone of the company’s product portfolio.
LIKE MILK will be sold in 200ml paper containers, with a 1000ml size expected for a test release later in 2025.
