Rising food prices: spectacular price increases at the beginning of the year
In the first month of the year, a significant price increase can be observed in stores: in the same store, the same products cost up to 10 percent more than a month earlier. The phenomenon is also illustrated by a picture gallery uploaded to TikTok, which was spotted by Pénzcentrum.
Spectacular price increase in a few weeks
According to a post shared on social media, the price of several basic foods jumped significantly in January 2025. One of the most notable changes occurred in the case of mayonnaise, the price of which increased from 1,249 HUF to over 1,700 HUF for a 700 ml package. The price of tomatoes per kilo also increased noticeably, from 1,199 HUF to 1,299 HUF, which represents a price increase of almost 10 percent.
Customers also feel the difference
Consumers are increasingly perceiving the increase in prices during their everyday shopping. Peppers, tomatoes and mayonnaise are just a few examples of products that have become more expensive, but a similar trend can be observed in many other food products.
The special thing about the TikTok video is that the uploader did not comment on the price increase, only the images and prices speak for themselves. The compared photos clearly show how quickly customers are faced with increasing expenses.
What could be behind the price increase?
There are several possible reasons for the increase in food prices:
Inflation: The effect of the general depreciation of money also significantly affects food prices.
Increase in supplier and production costs: The increase in energy prices and raw material prices makes production even more expensive.
Market processes: Changes in demand and supply can also contribute to the price increase.
