World Food Day: 950,000 food donations on foodora
On the occasion of World Food Day on October 16, a day of global awareness and action for the hungry, foodora reaffirms its commitment to fighting hunger through its partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme and its ShareTheMeal app. This feature allows users to donate food directly to those in need.
Thanks to the joint effort, 950,000 food donations have been collected on foodora so far, to which Hungary contributed 210,000 portions. As expected, the one million mark will be crossed in 2025.
According to the Global Report on Food Crises 2025, hunger worldwide increased for the sixth consecutive year in 2024. More than 295 million people in 53 countries faced acute levels of hunger, an increase of nearly 14 million compared to 2023.
Through the ShareTheMeal feature, foodora customers can donate after placing their order, and the amount will be sent directly to the World Food Programme, which will use the money to deliver food donations. This year, foodora customers have already donated more than 950,000 meals, an increase of nearly 80% compared to the previous year. In 2024, foodora customers donated 530,000 meals.
Ongoing Hungarian initiatives to combat hunger and food waste
In addition to the partnership with the UN, foodora is committed to eradicating hunger in the Hungarian market as well.
“In Hungary, food rescue is already an established routine at foodora. Foodora MARKETs are stores that are optimized for orders and cannot be entered as customers. In addition to efficient operation, minimizing the ecological footprint is also important during operation.
We have been cooperating with the Hungarian Food Bank for 14 years, we hand over food that is close to expiration on a daily basis, and they, together with their member organizations, ensure that it reaches those in need. In the past “In the past years, more than 200 tons of food have been saved with their help and delivered to those in need.”
I would like to encourage everyone to use the ShareTheMeal function in the app after placing an order, or to donate through the Food Bank’s virtual restaurant, as even a small help can mean the world to someone in need,” said Péter Garay, CEO of foodora.
