World Food Day 2025 – FAO turns 80
About 8% of the world’s population, or 673 million people, are hungry, while nutrition-related problems (such as obesity and overweight or various deficiency diseases) are spreading rapidly, not sparing our continent or our country. Meanwhile, a third of the food produced for human consumption never reaches our plates. The list of food-related problems is long and change can only be achieved through collaboration.
Every year, on October 16, World Food Day serves as a reminder and at the same time points out our own role, because we all have a responsibility to create a hunger-free, prosperous future. World Food Day, which celebrates the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945 – which was included among the important days at the initiative of Hungary – loudly proclaims that everyone must have access to nutritious, safe and sustainable food at affordable prices. Now is the time to come together to create a better and more sustainable future for everyone. This year’s World Food Day also marks the 80th anniversary of the FAO establishment.
The FAO Budapest-based Europe and Central Asia Office is preparing for World Food Day with the following events.
20 years of the FAO-Food Bank donation convoy
The World Food Day donation convoy, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, invites representatives of the press to a meaningful program.
The convoy of 20 trucks will cross downtown Budapest on the morning of October 16, loaded with food donations worth approximately 45 million forints. The campaign, organized by FAO and the Hungarian Food Bank Association, will make the lives of Hungarian families in need easier through products offered by Hungarian and international food producers and distributors.
The vehicles will stop at Hősök teren, where Nabil Gangi, FAO Deputy Regional Representative, Szilvia Szabó, Executive Director of the Hungarian Food Bank Association, and Oszkár Ökrös, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture will welcome them during a short press event.
In line with the FAO motto ‘Fiat Panis’ [Let there be bread], Gergő Fekete, founder of Artizán Pékség will provide guidance on choosing quality bread, and Honeybeast, also celebrating its 20th anniversary, will be represented by singer Zsófia Tarján, who will talk about their World Food Day collection.
We look forward to seeing you at the donation convoy press event on October 16th, starting at 9 a.m. at Hősök Bistro (1068 Budapest, Dózsa György út 96.); the convoy’s arrival, interviews, photos and video shooting are expected from 10 a.m. (depending on traffic). Please indicate your intention to participate by email.
Margit Bridge is flying flags
In Budapest, between October 11 and 19, unique World Food Day and FAO 80th anniversary flags will be flying on Margaret Bridge to raise awareness of World Food Day and the founding of FAO.
The World Food Day brochure
The World Food Day 2025 publication provides a short, colorful and informative overview of FAO’s work with member countries and partners, and how it contributes to a more sustainable and inclusive agriculture and food system. The publication will show you what you can do at the individual level to ensure that more people have access to nutritious, safe and sustainable food.
Hand in hand for better nutrition and a better future
World Food Day 2025
World Food Day 2025 also marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of FAO, which calls for action under the motto “Hand in hand for better nutrition and a better future” collaborations for the renewal of agriculture and food. Hundreds of World Food Day events in more than 150 countries aim to raise awareness and encourage action to end hunger and secure the future of food, humanity and our planet.
On the origins of World Food Day
The first World Food Day celebration took place in Rome in 1981, at the initiative of Hungary. The origin of the idea of the World Day is recounted by Péter Vándor, former Hungarian Permanent Representative to the United Nations.<a
