One of the most popular products of the domestic dairy market, Trappist cheese, can now be sold on store shelves under stricter quality conditions – Olga Beáta Felkai, Deputy State Secretary responsible for food chain supervision at the Ministry of Agriculture, drew attention to this in her LinkedIn post.
According to the politician, Trappist cheese remains the favorite of Hungarian consumers:
“A few years ago, a renowned dairy industry expert said that domestic consumers know an average of 1.1 cheeses, and one of them is Trappist. I trust that our cheese consumption has become more sophisticated since then, but it is certain that Trappist still carries everything”
– he wrote.
Szigor jön a trappista és a vadkovászos fronton – új rendelet védi a vásárlókat
The new Hungarian Food Code has so far only contained detailed guidelines for “special quality” Trappist, while the standard version only contained a product group-level description. This has led to significant quality differences between the products available in stores.
The newly published regulation fills this gap: it precisely records the sensory characteristics of Trappist cheese – such as taste, texture, external and internal appearance – and also defines the ingredients that can be used and the composition criteria.
The goal is for customers to always find reliably high-quality Trappist cheese on the shelves.
“The regulation can contribute to eliminating the heterogeneous quality of Trappist cheese available in stores, and to providing consumers with a uniform, guaranteed get a high-quality product”
– said Olga Felkai Beáta.
