Increasing food exports to Romania
Last year, Romania became the 2nd largest receiver of Hungarian food export. Romania is a 20 million market in the neighborhood. The purchasing power of its population increased, but its agricultural economy is not able to satisfy the demands.
In the period between 2002-2008 Hungary's food export to Romania has increased fourfold. Last year, after Germany, Romania was the second most important food export markets for Hungary, with a value of 812 million euros. This year Hungary can reach a one billion euros turnover, and perhaps also to overtake Germany. Juhász Anikó the leader of the Agricultural Research Division of the Department of Agricultural Research states that in Romania, the same happened as in the newly acceded EU countries, where a significant part of the local production became the victim of the single market connections, and the demand was satisfied with goods from more developed countries. In Romania, it was coincided with the rapid growth of public purchasing power. The Romanian agriculture is not currently able to meet any of the trade, or manufacturing needs – reports maipiac.hu.
