Young people’s perception of their current situation and future expectations has improved significantly: in the first quarter, the K&H Youth Index value increased to 22 points, which is a record in the index’s more than twelve-year history. Overall, young people are optimistic about the future: 73 percent believe that their lives will change to a greater or lesser extent in the near future, but in a positive direction.

Overall, the situation of young people has become more favorable during the first quarter of this year. The K&H Youth Index value increased to +22 points from +17 points measured in the last quarter of last year and +11 points a year earlier. This is a record level in the survey’s more than twelve-year history; the best results previously characterized 2019 and early 2021, when the index stood at +20 points, which describes the material, financial, and labor market situation of young people aged 19-29, their current satisfaction with life, and their future expectations.

Keep it up

The overall picture shows a positive and improving trend, but there is still room for improvement. 42 percent of young people are satisfied with their lives, while a year earlier their rate was only 38 percent. Meanwhile, many were unable to take a clear position, that is, they were both satisfied and not: they formed a 43 percent camp in the first quarter of this year, while last year they achieved a result of 44 percent at the same time. The rate of dissatisfied young people, on the other hand, decreased to 15 percent year-on-year, while almost 20 percent of them stated this at the beginning of 2023. In the survey, young people also expressed their opinions on what they expect in the future. The rate of optimists is 73 percent, which is an improvement compared to last year’s level of 67 percent. In line with this, the rate of those who draw a pessimistic vision of the future has melted from 33 percent to 27 percent.

“Based on the research, it can be said that young people have become more confident. Their overall satisfaction with life and their expectations regarding changes in their lives have shown a slowly increasing trend in the past four quarters”

– Zoltán Rammacher, Head of Marketing for the Retail Customer Segment at K&H Bank, assessed the results. The expert also highlighted that according to the survey, young people see their chances of obtaining an apartment as better than before. Moving to an independent property may be facilitated by the fact that young people can obtain a housing loan with a preferential interest rate this year.
