The number of convenience stores in Hungary is decreasing
The trend of recent years leaves no doubt: the number of Hungarian retail stores is constantly decreasing. According to the latest data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), in June 2023, there were only 103,000 retail units operating in Hungary, which is 6.4 percent less compared to the data of a year earlier.
According to the statistical data, Pest county stands out with its high daily turnover of HUF 618,000 on average, while Békés county reaches only 53 percent of this amount. This significant difference shows the regional differences that characterize the retail market – writes a recent article in Világgazdaság.
Nationally, the retail turnover reached HUF 18.4 thousand billion in 2023, which is 7.9 percent less than the figure of the previous year. The average daily turnover per store was HUF 448,000, which is even higher compared to Budapest, where customers spent HUF 5,900 per day.
The decrease in retail stores by type is 4.5 percent for food and food-related stores, while for stores selling other products, this rate is 7.4 percent. The number of gas stations decreased by 3.6 percent. These data indicate that the retail sector is undergoing transformation and that smaller, local stores are finding it increasingly difficult to find their place in the market.
