One million food packages that were destined to be thrown away were saved by the application of a Hungarian startup
With the Munch food rescue application, more than one million food packages that were destined to be thrown away have already been saved in Hungary, with which the users have achieved savings of about one billion forints – the Hungarian startup company that operates the application, Munch Europe Szolgáltató Kft., informed MTI.
In the announcement, it was recalled that 60 million tons of food waste is produced in Europe every year, and 66 kilograms of food waste per person in Hungary. A large part of this is made up of food that has expired and spoiled due to improper storage.The company was founded by four university students in the summer of 2020 with the aim of combating food waste and increasing the commitment of companies and consumers to sustainability.Through the application, users can buy food packages from shops and restaurants close to their residence, as well as from bakeries and hotels at a discount of 40-70 percent compared to the original price.
In response to MTI’s inquiry, the company stated that its largest partners include Spar, Interspar, Penny, and certain units of Coop, but they also have an agreement with the Lipóti bakery, Café Frei, and Starbucks coffee chains.
