A billion HUF food donation from METRO
The cooperation between METRO and the Hungarian Food Bank is five year old this year. Since 2012, the METRO Kereskedelmi Kft. sent more than 1 billion HUF worth food donations to the Food Bank, of which more than 2 million doses of food packages were put together over the years and transported them to approximately 50,000 families each year.
According to the data of the United Nations and the Hungarian Food Bank, in Hungary we produce approximately 2 million tons of food waste a year. Each year we throw nearly 50 kg per capita food away to the trash. With this result, Hungary is in the midfield in the EU. At the same time hundreds of thousands of people are hungry in Hungary, of which approximately 20 thousand are children. But the situation is not only bad in Hungary, food waste is increasing globally every year as well.
