Dumping of Egyptian and Chinese garlic is expected
Over the past few years, the amount of garlic produced in Hungary has decreased by a third. Meanwhile, garlic imports have multiplied, and last year we imported six times more garlic than we exported. In addition, Chinese and Egyptian products are increasingly spreading on the market and replacing domestic garlic.
In 2018, garlic was still grown on 1,250 hectares in Hungary, and during the previous five years, 5.2-7.9 thousand tons of garlic were usually grown by domestic producers. However, last year, garlic was grown on only 815 hectares, from which 5.5 thousand tons were harvested. This year, garlic is grown on only 800 hectares.
The quality and content of Hungarian garlic is generally better than that of foreign competitors. It also surpasses foreign products in terms of smell and taste. Annual garlic exports are usually around 400-700 tons, while imports are between 900-2500 tons. Last year, imports exceeded exports by six times, and the amount imported was roughly two and a half times more than in 2018.
