The Hungarian Restaurant Association recommends an agreement on short-term apartment rental
According to the Hungarian Restaurant Association, short-term housing rentals must be regulated based on international experience and in consultation with professional organizations. As a temporary measure, they recommend that in 2025 no new permits be issued for short-term housing rentals in Budapest’s World Heritage areas.
In its announcement sent to MTI, the association highlighted that tourism accounts for 14 percent of Hungary’s GDP, 50 percent of which is realized in Budapest. More than 50 percent of the accommodation capacity in the capital consists of short-term rental apartments, and hotels do not even account for half of the total capacity.
Therefore, the Hungarian Restaurant Association recommends that the government devote a year to the professional regulation of the issue. During this period, a professional team should conduct a market survey, study international experiences and best practices, and coordinate with professional organizations. Based on this, it is necessary to develop a regulation that can be a guideline at the European level as well – they wrote.
According to the association, the regulation should primarily focus on the inner districts of Budapest, mostly on the inner districts of Pest, and especially on the world heritage areas. It is not necessary to introduce national regulations.
