The price of some seasonal products is even reduced by half in the summer
Based on the experience of the past years, it can be observed that the price of green peppers and tomatoes drops significantly in the summer. Over the years, a similar pattern can be observed every year, as the amount of the crop increases, the prices also decrease. Pénzcentrum’s article reviews the annual price changes of four different products (early potatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, pears), going back to 2019.
According to one example, the price of green pepper was HUF 1,290 in April, but by August it was only HUF 614, and then in September-October it was HUF 538, which corresponded to an astonishing drop of 140 percent.
The same pattern can be observed in other years, for example in 2020 and 2021, when the price of green peppers and tomatoes similarly decreased in summer. In 2022, despite the increase in inflation, a similar trend can be observed.
The article points out that the price of seasonal products changes primarily based on supply and demand in the market. Prices move in sync with changes in the amount of produce, especially in the summer months when a larger amount of produce is available.
At the same time, it can be read from the data that prices are rising in the long term. For example, the price of tomatoes in 2019 was HUF 499 per kilo, by 2023 it was already close to HUF 800. The article therefore shows that although annual cyclical price changes can be easily monitored, price increases can also be detected in the longer term.
