Price continues to dominate
As discounts, especially Aldi and Lidl are strengthening, more people become acquainted with New World wines in the HUF 600-800 price category. In the medium term, these will be competitors of Hungarian wines. White wines generate 74 percent of domestic wine sales. Former favourite Chardonnay slowly gives way to wines from the overseas and the Etyek wine region. Tokaj is losing ground, Villány continues to thrive and Sopron tries to keep up. Irsai Olivér, rosé and Syrah are expected to grow; cheaper segments and foreign wines are also about to improve sales. In my opinion, the rebirth of spritzer will continue, with lighter wines of a lower alcohol content also advancing. As a retailer, I think that we need constant communication and cooperation with wine makers.
