One service less at Balaton
This year, the Balaton First Aid Service treated a record number of injuries, providing assistance in more than 3,500 cases on 19 beaches in 13 settlements of Lake Balaton. More than three hundred young people between the ages of 16 and 30 participated as volunteers in the service organized by the Hungarian Red Cross and the Hungarian Youth Red Cross during the summer.
The tasks of the young volunteers included providing immediate first aid on the beaches, starting CPR if necessary, and treating injuries sustained in the water and on the shore. Most often, they encountered cuts, abrasions and insect bites caused by shells or stones. Due to the extreme heat, however, they had to intervene in many cases for sunburn, heat exhaustion and sunstroke.
The 18th season of the service ended on Tuesday, and during the last 18 years, the volunteers of the Balaton First Aid Service treated a total of 55,889 injuries professionally.
