A higher VAT could save lifes in Britan
A tax on fatty foods such as cakes and biscuits could prevent more than 3,000 premature deaths a year, a new study has shown.
Researchers from Oxford University said extending the VAT
charge of 17.5 per cent to more high-fat foods would prevent many heart attacks
and strokes — as well as making the Treasury millions. Currently the charge is
applied to confectionery, ice cream, savoury snacks and most drinks.
