The finalists in this year’s SIAL d’Or (Salon International de l’Alimentation) new product competition epitomise the most innovative products – and possible fresh concepts to introduce into the South African market – that were introduced around the world in 2011.
The products spanning nine different categories were submitted by trade journalists from 29 countries, who then judged each product based on its level of innovation and sales success.
The winners in each category will compete for the SIAL d’Or grand prize to be presented at the SIAL Paris exhibition, which brings together food producers, manufacturers and retailers from across the world in October.
PLP Seafood Hungary Kft’s Selfish Trout is ready-to-bake in the oven in just 10 minutes, and is seasoned with fresh lemon and herb butter in a vacuum bag. The innovation lies in the idea of putting fresh fish in a vacuum bag to extend its shelf life, and to ensure that the bag can withstand the temperatures of oven cooking, enhancing the product’s convenience appeal.
