51.5 percent of those planning to buy a car would not buy an electric car, 12.2 percent would consider buying an electric vehicle, and the remaining respondents are undecided on the issue, automotive industry data provider carVertical told MTI on Thursday, based on a survey covering 35 countries.

In the survey, 43.8 percent of those surveyed chose gasoline as their preferred fuel type, 38.9 percent chose diesel, 10.4 percent chose hybrid, and only 5.6 percent chose electric propulsion.

In the statement, Matas Buzelis, an automotive industry expert at carVertical, explained that high prices, shortcomings in the charging network, and misconceptions about electric cars all contribute to buyers’ lack of enthusiasm for the technology. He believed that it is increasingly clear that completely replacing cars equipped with internal combustion engines will pose a serious challenge. Government measures alone are not enough – customers are simply not ready to switch, he added.

The statement recalled that the EU has decided to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel passenger cars from 2035 and that all new vehicles must be zero-emission, in order to achieve the climate neutrality target set for 2050.

According to the survey, those who prefer and are willing to buy an electric vehicle give various reasons for their decision. 47.2 percent of respondents believe that electric cars are cheaper to operate and maintain. Electric cars have significantly fewer moving mechanical parts, so servicing costs are often lower than petrol or diesel vehicles. Rising fuel prices are also encouraging drivers to choose electric propulsion as a more cost-effective alternative.
